Tasting toilet paper

As any good one year old would do, Lucy decided to taste the toilet paper. She's been wandering around with it putting it in her hair, dragging it around the house, and wiping her face off with it for weeks. But until now it hasn't passed her lips. Well, it wasn't quite the taste that she was expecting, and it came right back out. Guess it's a bit grainy...you know...like toilet paper can be.

Just like Sam

Lucy climbed right up on the bed with Sam and slid in right next to him to see what he was doing. She's gotten the idea that the Nintendo's are cool, and occasionally make noise, but she's really starting to figure out that the boys can get them to do all kinds of magical things!

The agony of defeat

Max's indoor soccer recreation team got their butts handed to them on a platter today, and my kid walked away smiling. Amazing what teaching kids the value of playing a good game verses winning the game will do - it actually works.

Max has always has a great attitude whether he wins or loses, and it was nice to see that smile today after their really ugly loss. The team that these kids were playing against were not only an age division up from our team, but they clearly had been playing together for at least a few seasons. They came out swinging and never let up. We barely got going in the first half, and the score looked terrible. But our kids never gave up and they played as hard as they could for the full 50 minutes. It was really impressive to see some of our kids getting beat and then picking right back up and chasing down some of the older (and bigger) players. The image that sticks in my mind is one of our smallest player, a 7 year old, going up against one of their bigger players - our player came up to the shoulders of this big kid. Our player wasn't going to let that phase him, and he kept at it until the popped the ball out and then he took off with it.

So, the kids got their teeth knocked in today by a much older more experienced team, they played their best, and Max was clearly proud of his effort. Oh yeah - he scored a goal on those kids. And yes, two of his teammates did too.

And suddenly it's the middle of the night.

And the worst part is - you only realized that it was the middle of the night because you got cold - really cold. Yeah, it was your body shutting down. The worst part? Your hubby, who normally gets up with the kids, is in another state. Not the state of unconsciousness, but an actual other state, and you are on the hook for the AM routine.

Glasses anyone?

How long are you allowed to let your kid go with broken glasses? What is the rule in Mom Land? Well, in my part of Mom land, as long as it takes for you to get collected enough and decide how to replace them so they don't have the same exact failure all over again. You see, this little man:
cute as he is, is very hard on his glasses (and it has nothing to do with soccer). He is constantly fidgeting with them. If you look closely you will see that they are all cattywampus on his face. We have taken him in to have them adjusted about 10 times since he got them in March of this year. Yes, TEN times in 7 months. But while we joke when we leave that we'll see them in a week (they laugh - I don't) I get sick of having to drive over to the eyeglass place to get them adjusted. But, I always do. Tom, on the other hand, decides that HE will adjust them and of course, they finally fail. We bought Ian the fancy Flexon glasses that can bend around your finger, absorb the impact of being hit with a ball, and retain their shape when you sleep on them. But apparently you cannot adjust them at home. Those times that we are told NOT to try this at home, well, no one mentioned that in respect to the glasses. So, the one part that is NOT the Flexon breaks. Yes, his nose piece is just gone from his glasses, and of course the 90 day warranty is up. Well, that and his daddy broke them (at least that's what IAN tells me).
So, the dragging of my feet here involves the next step - what the heck should we put him in that won't break at the drop of the hat, yet will give his clearer vision. Part of the reason we got them adjusted so often was that he pushed them really, REALLY far up his nose to see, and him fidgeted with them all the time. A pair with a fixed nose piece would solve that problem, but plastic frames (my current frame of choice) doesn't fly on a 6 year old. So, we're heading back to the eyeglasses place here in a day or so, and we will try once again to get this darling little man into a pair of frames that will last him longer than a week.

Dear Blog

I am so sorry that I forgot about you. I actually did forget about you for a while there. Between a sick hubby (he is fine now), the end of the crazy soccer season (it's over now), the beginning of a school district wide budget fight (that's just ramping up), and the leaves changing color and falling off the trees (that's still going on), I was, let's say, a bit distracted. It was really the leaves though that caught my eye first. Then this:
and this:
and of course this too:
But that's no real excuse. It was the leaves, and they are indeed beautiful this time of year.

YES!

Go Longhorns! Moving up in the BCS world sure feels nice. And the Seminoles stood up and took their licks and came out victorious too! What a great football weekend!
